Mark Pearce Director
I started building interactive education and training content in 1991 and haven't stopped. It's been an interesting journey, from interactive video, DVD technology, through to the widespread adoption of the internet and the migration to mobile devices. Most discussions around technology have been replaced as the new generation of digital natives experience it as a social tool and something that’s just part of their everyday lives. This new paradigm presents some challenges, but mostly lots of exciting opportunities to connect and engage audiences in deeper and more meaningful ways.
Colin Scott Director
I work with our design teams on all projects to challenge their thinking and make sure we achieve the right level of quality across the creative process. One of the most important aspects of our approach to design is that we never take clients for granted – they're putting their trust in us when buying creativity, so I make sure we work hard to deliver the best possible solution every time.
Richard Palmer Director
I create, build and maintain relationships with our clients. It’s about understanding the dynamics of each organisation that we work with and helping them think differently about how they communicate. I started out as a product and structural packaging designer before going on to project and account management. As a result, I’m aware of clients’ needs and understand the challenges our designers, writers and programmers face. It’s my job to strike the right balance and make sure we come up with the best possible response to a brief.
Craig Dall Account Director
As account manager, I’m responsible for building relationships with our clients and getting under the skin of each organisation to help shape their digital, learning and multimedia strategies and communications. I always try and approach all projects from a user’s perspective, rather than a technical or design point of view. Bells and whistles are all very well, but it’s essential that they don’t dominate a project’s real task. I understand the issues that project teams face and it’s my job to make sure that we deliver the best solution.
Sam Rhead Project Manager
I manage the relationships between everyone involved with a project, both inside and outside The Workshop. I talk to clients every day, making sure that they’re up to date with how their project is progressing and sorting out the inevitable niggles. I’ll also work with our creative team and manage each project’s budget and make sure that what we deliver is on time and top quality. Having set goals at the start of a project, it’s always exciting to see the end result.
Gemma Reed Project Manager
I often have the hottest hotline in the office, as I keep in regular contact with our clients about their projects and requirements. I get excited by the creative ideas that come from the team and it makes me happy to help shape our solutions and add value for our clients. As well as being ridiculously tidy and organised (obviously), I’m also a stickler for consistency and quality. I try and make sure I provide a calm head and safe pair of hands for everyone.
Jon Wellard Project Manager
These days I’m a project manager, but I started out as a designer. That gives me a unique perspective and really helps when I’m balancing the needs of our clients with the realities of the creative process. It’s about getting the foundations right - the detail and understanding we establish at the start of a project allow us to deliver quality and creativity later in the process.
Hannah Wysome Account Manager and Content Manager
For me it's all about the user experience – if your audience isn't engaged from the first click, even the greatest content becomes redundant. I look for left-field routes into learning content, always seeking out the essential details that grab attention and fire up the imagination. That's why you'll find colour blind monkeys explaining visual cryptography in our games for The Royal Institution. I love working with clients who let us run with it, and I'm forever grateful for amazing colleagues who specialise in turning my terrible doodles into things of beauty.
Paul Ward Creative Director
I manage our design team and oversee the design of all The Workshop’s projects in both print and multimedia. It’s my job to make sure that our work is finished to the highest standards, from initial concept to final product. I also work with Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield College, setting briefs, running portfolio surgeries and giving talks to up and coming design students. We invite them to come into the studio on placement throughout the year, which gives them a real taste of what it’s like to work in a professional environment.
Rachel Coles Designer
I’ve been at The Workshop for over a decade. I’ve designed corporate and brand identities and developed training materials and internal communications for clients large and small. I love art and it’s great to be able to design and illustrate on such a range of projects, whether it’s for print or screen.
Lee Durman Designer
I’ve worked in the industry for more than 20 years, which means I can bring a wealth of experience to every project. Whatever I’m working on, whether it’s designing for print or screen, illustrating or solving a typography problem, attention to detail is always vital. It’s about getting the small things right so that the overall design not only meets the client’s brief, but looks great and works perfectly.
Matt Pearce Designer
I'm a designer with over 10 years’ experience in illustration and multimedia. I’ve worked on many high-profile interactive projects at The Workshop, including much of our work for the BBC and The Royal Institution. As an illustrator, I love working in 3D and working out the fine details, whether it’s for an instructional whiteboard or educational game. It’s often those things that are less obvious that add the real richness and character.
Robert Regester Artworker
I have over 20 years’ industry experience as an artworker. When you produce print-ready artwork, you need an eye for detail, especially when checking proofs for production, overseeing the production process, correcting images and retouching. I’ve also got a range of experience in creating accessible PDFs for our clients.
Darren Thacker Designer
I’m part of the multimedia design team at The Workshop and love exploring and using new techniques and technologies. I’ve been an illustrator, animator, designer, video and sound engineer on large projects for high-profile clients, including much of our work for the BBC. I also direct our actors and voice-over artists, either on location, in the studio or using green screen.
Andrew Turner Creative Manager
I work hard to properly understand how our clients work and how we can help improve their business. From branding, campaigns and communications to ideas, people and products, I stay busy thinking of ways to make things work better for our clients. I’m also responsible for the public face of The Workshop, which includes this very website.
Sam Witt Designer
I work on a range of digital and print projects for our clients and I’m The Workshop’s lead designer on our work for Morrisons. Good design responds directly to a client's requirements, but I always try to give them fresh ideas and suggest things they wouldn’t have thought about without us – that’s how we can make a real difference. I love the challenge of finding the right solution within the constraints of a project’s budget and timescales.
Joanne Mateer Content Team Manager
As content team manager, I look after all things content-related on our marketing and communications projects. I also advise clients on communication strategy, including digital marketing, social media, audience engagement and tone of voice. Well-crafted copy can move mountains and help you connect to your audiences, conjure up emotions and change how others see you. It pays to get it right.
Michael Batey Content Manager
I’m a content manager with 15 years' experience in designing learning products and writing for the web. I’m particularly interested in information architecture, usability and social media, and how they can all help to get a client’s message across. I’m a passionate believer in the difference that well-written copy can make – especially online, where attention spans are cruelly short and the competition is just a couple of clicks away.
Katie Borland Content Manager
I research and write learning, brand and marketing materials, guiding products through our quality assurance processes. I’ve also designed and delivered a range of training workshops for clients and their customers. It’s very satisfying and I love being part of a friendly, talented team that brings brilliant ideas to life for our clients.
Iain Broome Communications Manager
I’m a copywriter, copy-editor and content producer for print and screen. I’m also a Plain English specialist, which is about developing clear, concise content that’s right for its audience. When not writing for clients, I’m responsible for The Workshop’s tone of voice and communications. My first novel will be published by Legend Press on 1 September 2012 and I’m the founder of Write for Your Life, a relatively popular website about writing.
Dan Ramsden Content Manager
I specialise in devising, writing and creating content for communication and learning. I have a background in using interactive theatre for training, and bring a love of narrative and a respect for audiences and end users to the projects I work on. As an amateur magician, I also like to add magic to everything I do, both literally and metaphorically.
Amy Sayles Content Writer Intern
I research and develop content for a variety of projects, from printed materials to websites and learning products. Studying for my degree in Creative Advertising sparked a love for crafting short, simple copy that still oozes brand personality. My main interest is in making content clear and easy to understand – with the occasional bit of cheesy wordplay if I can get away with it! I believe that people need to engage with a brand straight away in order to want to commit to it.
Mat Evans Technical Director
I look after our team of developers who build web and multimedia applications for our clients. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the industry and have seen The Workshop grow, adapt and become experts in many different technologies. I play a role in pretty much every technical project we do – it’s my job to make sure that we use the right technology and meet the latest technical standards.
Rebecca Hubbard Developer
I’m a programmer specialising in Flash and other multimedia products. A lot of what I do comes under the heading of computer-based training – I help develop engaging interactive educational content, and I particularly love creating educational content for kids. I think writing code is a truly artistic process. The result is functional, efficient and easy to read, a thing of beauty in its own right that works perfectly and does exactly what our clients need.
Paul Robinson Developer
I have more than 10 years’ experience and have produced a range of work, from learning and multimedia projects to developing games and working with third-party APIs. At The Workshop, I’ve been lead developer on projects for clients including the BBC and UK online centres. I also researched, built and continue to maintain our accessible media player, which has been taken on and used by organisations around the world.
Craig Shaw Developer
I build websites using a range of programming languages and content management systems. It’s important that we choose a technical platform that answers the client’s brief and meets the latest web standards. To make sure that we set out on the right path, I’ll always provide technical consultancy at the beginning of a project. Where possible, I’ll look to push new technology and turn our research into practice for our clients.
Dan Lowthorpe Quality Manager
I'm technical quality manager. I define, develop, document and implement our testing procedures on all our interactive and web projects. Quality doesn't just happen – someone needs to make sure it's built-in from day one. At The Workshop, that someone happens to be me.
Jill Copley Proofreader
My job is to make sure all our printed work meets our high quality standards. Detail is what I do – it’s what holds a project together. If the detail’s not right, our eye-catching designs and mind-grabbing copy are wasted. I’m also responsible for quality testing our multimedia products and making sure everything meets our high standards of quality, usability and accessibility.
Diane Westerman Quality Tester
I have a sharp eye for detail and a desire to get things right – which is just as well because it’s my job to make sure all our projects meet The Workshop’s uncompromising standards for quality, usability and accessibility. I proofread our print and multimedia work and quality test multimedia products.
Bob Millington Commercial Director
As The Workshop’s commercial director, it's my job to make sure the business is financially sound and that our reporting information is in order. I have more than 30 years' post qualifying experience in accounting and business management for small and medium-sized businesses.
Cressida Pearce HR/Production Manager
I’m in charge of HR, and I love watching people develop in their professional and personal lives throughout their time with us. Delivering projects on time and to high standards is not always easy, but I enjoy the feeling of teamwork and the shared sense of humour. The end result is always impressive and represents so much creativity and hard work. It makes me proud of the team and the company.
Dawne Richardson Office Manager
As the office manager I’m the first port of call for a lot of things. I welcome visitors, manage meeting spaces and support the rest of the team, so I’m involved in most of what we do, one way or another. I’ve also worked on the production side of the business, managing projects and working closely with the creative team. This means I understand what goes into the projects we deliver, and how I can help.
Lisa Heseltine Company Accountant
I’m financial controller at The Workshop. It’s my job to support our account and project managers when it comes to anything money-related. I’m also responsible for producing all The Workshop’s financial and management accounts and keeping a tight grip on our finances.
Bobbie Scott Office Manager
I’m one of the founding members of The Workshop and as print manager, it’s about getting the highest possible quality for our clients at the right price. I manage projects from artwork through to delivery, making sure that everything is proofed and quality checked. Over 20 years of working with our suppliers, I’ve built up solid relationships that help us get the right solution, delivered on time for our clients.
Tiina Carr Consultant
I work closely with our clients to understand exactly what they need and making sure that they get it. I love developing branding, marketing and digital communication strategies that help our clients achieve their vision. I’m also a retail specialist and expert in employee communications, working with Morrisons to help them communicate with their 130,000 staff. It’s satisfying to know that what I do makes a real difference for so many people.
